I am a professor in the political science department at The University of Michigan. I've been teaching and writing about international politics since I finished my PhD in 1993. Before that I went to college at Cornell University (and very briefly at the University of Chicago...but that's a long story). During an extended hiatus from my days as a member of the Big Red Heavyweight Crew, I served as a communications specialist (18E3) in the US Army (ODA 072 A-3-10).

These days I spend my time teaching classes on International Politics, writing on a variety of security related topics, rowing, gardening, hunting (a.k.a. spending time with my dogs), taking pictures, following the number 24 car, and looking forward to getting to work on my new house in Ann Arbor, MI.

For the 2007-08 academic year I will be a fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University

You'll find a variety of professional and recreational bits on these pages. If you're trying to track down data used in my work, don't hesitate to contact me by email: stam at umich dot edu.
